MINH DANG: STARTING FROM A FAMILY WITH A “SPORTs” TRADITION

Hello everyone,

It’s me, Minh Đăng!

Coming from a family with a strong sports tradition, especially in tennis, has shaped my journey in many ways. While I’ve previously shared why I play tennis, today’s story focuses on how my love for the sport developed from my family.

From a very young age, my parents have always emphasized the importance of taking responsibility, rigorous training, and how to demonstrate determination and emotional control. They saw tennis as a means to instill these values, considering it as essential as academics. Since then, Coach Tâm Hảo has been by my side throughout the 8 years of training and competing, through ups and downs, moments of frustration, and motivation.

As a growing child, I’ve had my fair share of mischief and stubbornness, sometimes throwing tantrums to get more freedom with technology and sports. This also contributed to my reluctance to continue playing tennis.

I really love basketball, my favorite sport, though I don’t have much time for it because I devote most of my time to academics and tennis training. I only get a few chances to play during breaks with classmates, but my love for the sport remains strong.

I mention this not to downplay my feelings for tennis, but to express that I’ve come to understand why my parents chose tennis as my main sport. Tennis also plays a crucial role in supporting my upcoming studies in the U.S.

Even though I often feel tired and drained after school and tennis practice, I see this time as an opportunity to release the energy from the day’s studies, rest, and chat with my coach.

I may not be old enough to fully express my gratitude, but I want to thank my parents for their guidance and protection throughout this long journey. For me, family is the best starting point!

To my parents: Even though I sometimes cause you trouble, I know these are things every child goes through. Like all children, I have my own interests and desires, and I sometimes struggle with the schoolwork. I understand that I can be impulsive and playful, but I always strive to be my best, cherished by my two older brothers, and loved by my parents and extended family. I am deeply grateful and love my family so much!
